“In the Rif Mountains, particularly in Chefchaouen, cannabis cultivation is more than just an economic activity: it is the inheritance of generations. For thousands of families, it provides sustenance in a region where conventional agriculture is unviable. Yet, for decades, criminalization has marginalized these farmers, subjecting them to repression and stigma. Systemic racism and prohibitionist policies have pushed them into invisibility, while the informal economy continued to grow. In 2021, Morocco regulated cannabis production for medicinal and industrial use, promising to transform the lives of these communities. But the transition remains unequal: the benefits of legalization have not reached everyone. This visual poem is a tribute to the cultivators of Chefchaouen — guardians of a tradition, resilient in the face of repression, and symbols of a fight for dignity and recognition.”
