“E kú Àfékú” follows Cida and Marta, two sisters who reunite at the crematorium after the death of their father, Pedro. Alongside their mother, Dona Rute — who faces her own finitude with unsettling serenity — they embark on a journey to fulfill the ritual of scattering the patriarch’s ashes in a river marked by childhood memories. In this passage led solely by women, mourning intertwines with Yoruba cosmology as they revisit the wounds, disputes, and affections that have shaped their lives. Cida, pragmatic and distant, seeks practical solutions for her mother’s future, while Marta, more emotionally tied to their parents, insists on respecting Dona Rute’s independence. Between arguments, memories, and silences, the mother tries to reconcile her daughters, evoking stories from the past in the hope of bringing them together. Yet the journey is accompanied by the subtle presence of Ìkú — Death, a figure from the Yoruba pantheon — who signals that the farewell will not be only for the father. Confronted with the imminence of loss, the sisters must face their choices, their resentments, and the urgency of forgiveness. Weaving the everyday reality of grief with the sacred, the script reveals the feminine strength at the heart of this farewell and the fragility of life itself. In its closing moments, an unexpected tragedy reshapes their journey.
