Tino hopes his dream of becoming a “Muxe Queen” will come true. As a homosexual child, he takes on the role of a girl in order to develop his adolescent female identity, and struggles to resolve his past and overcome his poverty. A documentary for the first time a muxe child is filmed in its growth stage. This film is a portrait of San Blas Atempa, a town that heroically defended itself against the French invasion of Mexico. Viewed through the stories of three of its residents, it is an intimate journey to the heart of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec Oaxaca, where there exists a third gender identity, which is neither a man nor a woman, but a Muxe (a Zapotec homosexual). Culturally, a Muxe assumes female social and sexual roles. The region is known for the strength of its women and this “magical town” – lost in the wild heel of Mexico – seeks a free and diverse society dominated by femininity – courageous women and men dressed as women. Muxe: In the Zapotec culture of southern Mexico, it is like a homosexual, with the spirit of a woman and pride in being a man.
